BAYLINK is an RS232 communication facility which enables serial data to be
manipulated and displayed as it is sent or received from your standard IBM
compatable PC via any serial port.
Below follows a short description of each of the menu functions which drive
BAYLINK.
--------------------------------- STARTUP ---------------------------------
BAYLINK's default mode is color, and BAYLINK also detects a monochrome monitor
automatically. To force a monochrome screen, the following command line is
applicable........
BAYLINK bw
Previously saved settings may be loaded with the filename passed as a
command line.
BAYLINK [bw] filename
--------------------------------- BAYLINK ----------------------------------
In the active mode, all INCOMING / OUTGOING characters are monitored at all
times. If any key on your PC keyboard is pressed, the ASCII equivalent is sent
out via any of the serial ports, depending on the type of port chosen. At the
same time, should any byte values arrive at any particular port, these will
be echoed back onto your PC screen.
The menu can be activated by pressing ESC at any stage. Control will then be
transferred to the menu. Pressing ESC once again will toggle you back to the
active mode.
---------------------------------- SHELL ------------------------------------
The SHELL command enables you to do one of two things. Firstly, by typing
the following command [Pathname + COMMAND.COM] when prompted will place BAYLINK
in the resident mode, and control will return to the operating system.
By typing in EXIT whilst in the OS will haul BAYLINK back from residency.
The second option with the SHELL command is the ability to execute programs
from within BAYLINK. When prompted, type in the FULL name of the file to be
executed. For example to run the program BAYLINK.EXE residing under the DOS
subdirectry, you may type in the following.... c:\dos\BAYLINK.EXE
Batch files cannot be executed.
---------------------------------- SEND -------------------------------------
The SEND mode enables you to send a complete file out via the serial port, in
the protocol chosen at that current time.
When asked, enter the filename to send. IF no pathname is given with the
filename, it is assumed that the file is on the current path.
A message will be displayed telling you when the file has been fully sent.
Should any type of file error occur, a file error message will be shown.
Pressing ESC during a file send will stop the send and return to the active
mode.
-------------------------------- DISPLAY ------------------------------------
The DISPLAY option enables you to view all the current protocol and parameter
settings.
The settings shown consist of the following -
- Baud rate (50bps to 115000bps)
- Parity (none, odd, even)
- Stop bits (1, 2 stop bits)
- Data bits (5, 6, 7, 8 data bits)
- Speed (default = 0)
- Port (com1, com2)
These values can be changed by entering the PARAMETERS section and choosing
the parameter that requires changing.
------------------------------ Rs232 STATUS ---------------------------------
This function enables the user to determine all the relevent status lines of
the Rs232 serial communications port at that current time.
The user also has access to change the status of the serial port. This is done
by a toggle action. Each time the RETURN key is pressed, the relevent status
line will be toggled.
Also indicated are the Rs232 pin numbers, as well as the loopback and interrupt
features.
--------------------------------- CAPTURE -----------------------------------
When CAPTURE is set, the user is then able to save all incoming data onto a
file previously chosen by the user.
On entering CAPTURE there are 2 major file choices for the user...
1) creating a new file or 2) Appending an existing file.
After 1) or 2) is chosen, BAYLINK automatically reverts into the Capture mode.
All incoming data will now be saved on file.
To exit the capture mode, choice 3 must be toggled. This then closes the
capture file and reverts back to the BAYLINK mode.
The capture mode may be toggled ON or OFF at any time providing a capture file
has been previously chosen.
-------------------------------- PARAMETERS ---------------------------------
The PARAMETER menu enables the user to define the data protocol of the incoming
or outgoing data as well as the serial port and speed of outgoing data.
The following PARAMETERS are available.....
- Baud rate (50bps to 115000bps)
- Parity (none, odd, even)
- Stop bits (1, 2 stop bits)
- Data bits (5, 6, 7, 8 data bits)
- Speed (default = 0)
- Port (com1, com2, com3)
The SPEED parameter is a delay factor which determines the speed at which the
send file data goes out the chosen com port.
A value of 0 means there will be no delay.
--------------------------------- FILES -------------------------------------
All your PARAMETER settings may be loaded and saved on disc by means of the
FILES menu.
The settings may be saved under any name with any extention, and the BAYLINK
default extention is [.BAY]
When BAYLINK is run, the parameter setting filename may be passed and loaded
up directly via the following means... [BAYLINK filename]
The Default option loads the internal default parameter settings.
Finally a Directry of any path may be called at any time.
--------------------------------- RECEIVE FILES ------------------------------
RECEIVE file enables you to capture incoming data directly to disk via the
RECEIVE file name, as supplied by the user. No byte data is displayed on the
screen, which results in faster file capture.
The only screen activity shown is the file SIZE in kilobytes, and the
byte data input activity indicator.
Use this MODE rather than the file capture mode when you want to TRANSFER
files from one PC to another.
This MODE makes sure ALL incoming data is captured at the maximum baud
rate.
!!NB All your keystrokes are still active in this mode, ie. they are still
transmitted.
--------------------------------- SEND STRING ------------------------------
By pressing F2, you can send an ASCII string (#1..#255) out on the serial port.
This is handy if you have short strings to send at regular intervals etc.
F3 will trnasmit the string, and F4 will cancel the transmission.
